Reading Psalms 112–118 reminded me that the Christian life isn’t about striving harder—it is about learning to trust God more deeply. These chapters move from the blessings of fearing the Lord to giving Him all the glory, depending on Him instead of people, remembering His faithfulness in prayer, and recognizing that every lasting victory begins and ends with Him.
The Blessing of Living in Reverence (Psalm 112)
“How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.”
The fear of the Lord isn’t about being afraid of Him. It’s about honoring Him so deeply that obedience becomes a delight rather than a burden.
The psalm describes the fruit of that life: influence that outlives us, generosity, stability, and a legacy that blesses future generations. I was especially struck that the blessing extends beyond one person to their children and generations after them. Our daily choices shape far more than our present.
As I continue rebuilding different areas of my life and business, this reminded me that success isn’t measured only by open doors or financial growth. The greatest success is becoming the kind of person God can trust with influence. Character is always a better inheritance than comfort.
God Specializes in Raising People (Psalm 113)
“He lifts the poor from the dust… He sets them among princes.”
Only God can completely rewrite a person’s story.
Throughout Scripture, God delights in taking what seems overlooked and placing it where only His grace could have taken it. Whether someone is struggling financially, emotionally, professionally, or spiritually, God is able to lift them beyond what human effort alone could achieve.
This verse also reminds me never to despise humble beginnings. Every promotion worth celebrating comes from God, and when He opens a door, no one can shut it.
The Presence of God Changes Everything (Psalm 114)
“Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord.”
Mountains moved. Seas parted. Nature itself responded to God’s presence.
Sometimes I become so focused on asking God to change my circumstances that I forget His presence is the greatest miracle. When God is present, impossible situations begin to shift. Peace replaces anxiety, wisdom replaces confusion, and courage replaces fear.
More than asking God to bless my plans, I want to remain where His presence is leading.
Give God the Glory (Psalm 115)
“Not to us, O Lord… but to your name goes all the glory.”
This is my favorite reminder.
In a world that encourages personal branding and self-promotion, this verse gently redirects my heart. Every opportunity, every answered prayer, every achievement, every open door is ultimately evidence of God’s unfailing love and faithfulness.
The same chapter also says:
“O Israel, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield.”
People are blessings, but they were never designed to replace God. Relationships, mentors, clients, investors, employers, and even governments all have limits. God does not.
God Hears Every Prayer (Psalm 116)
“I love the Lord because he hears my voice.”
What a beautiful reason to love God.
Prayer is never wasted. God bends down to listen to His children. That image stayed with me. The Creator of heaven and earth chooses to incline His ear toward us.
“In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me.”
Looking back, I can think of seasons where all I could honestly pray was, “Lord, help.” Yet time after time, He answered—not always how I expected, but always in the way I ultimately needed.
Remembering yesterday’s faithfulness gives us courage for today’s uncertainty.
God Is For You (Psalm 118)
“The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.”
What confidence we can have knowing that the Creator of the universe is on our side.
The psalm goes on to say that it is better to trust in the Lord than in people or princes. Human support is wonderful, but it is never the foundation of our confidence. God alone is.
I was also struck by the phrase:
“I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord.”
The victory didn’t come through personal strength but through God’s authority. That is how we overcome sin, fear, discouragement, and every obstacle that stands against God’s purposes.
Finally, the chapter concludes with one of my favorite verses:
“This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.”
When we look back over our lives, the greatest testimonies are the ones that only God could have written. They remind us that His timing is perfect, His ways are higher than ours, and His faithfulness never fails.
Practical Takeaways
- Choose obedience even when it isn’t easy.
- Let your goal be faithfulness before success.
- Trust God more than human connections or resources.
- Keep praying because God still listens.
- Give God the glory for every victory.
- Remember that if God is for you, you have nothing to fear.
Conclusion
Psalms 112–118 reminded me that God is looking for hearts that fear Him, trust Him, and give Him the glory. He is still lifting people from difficult places, answering prayers, protecting His children, and writing stories that point back to His goodness.
Whatever season you’re in today, may your confidence rest not in your own ability but in the God who hears, helps, and faithfully completes everything He begins.
Prayer
Father, teach me to fear You with reverence and to delight in obeying You. Help me trust You above every person, opportunity, or resource. Thank You for hearing every prayer, lifting the humble, and fighting battles I cannot fight on my own. May every testimony from my life point back to Your goodness so that You alone receive all the glory. Let my life become a reminder that when You are for us, nothing can stand against Your purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
