Lessons from Psalms 22–27: What God Is Teaching Me About Trust, Guidance, and Courage.

Over the past few weeks, the book of Psalms has felt less like a collection of songs and more like a companion on the journey. As I read Psalms 22–27, I found myself encouraged by David’s honesty. He didn’t pretend life was easy. He wrote about fear, disappointment, waiting, opposition, and uncertainty. Yet he continually returned to the same conclusion: God can be trusted.

As someone who has recently navigated health challenges, difficult questions, and seasons where I’ve needed God’s strength in fresh ways, these chapters ministered deeply to me.

When People Don’t Understand Your Journey

“Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads…” (Psalm 22:7-8)

David understood what it felt like to be misunderstood. He was mocked by people who assumed that if God truly loved him, he wouldn’t be suffering.

I think many believers can relate to this. Sometimes people see a difficult season and assume God has abandoned you. Other times, they question your decisions, your faith, or your waiting.

Yet David reminds us that people’s opinions are not proof of God’s absence.

Just because others don’t understand your journey doesn’t mean God isn’t leading it.

God Has Been Faithful Longer Than We Realize

“Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb…” (Psalm 22:9-10)

One of the questions I found myself asking was: Did David actually know God as a baby?

I don’t believe David meant he consciously knew God as an infant. Rather, he was recognizing something beautiful: God’s hand had been on his life long before he was aware of it.

Looking back on my own life, I can see countless moments where God was protecting, guiding, and preserving me before I even recognized what He was doing.

The same is true for all of us.

Our testimonies didn’t begin the day we gave our lives to Christ. God’s faithfulness started long before that.

God Still Renews Strength

“He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths…” (Psalm 23:3)

This verse practically jumped off the page.

Over the past several weeks, there have been days when I’ve felt physically tired, emotionally stretched, and overwhelmed by the number of things demanding attention. In those moments, I have found myself returning to this promise.

God does not merely tell us to keep going.

He renews us.

Not because we are strong, but because He is.

And what encourages me most is that He doesn’t only provide strength; He provides direction. The Shepherd restores and guides.

God Cares About Our Hearts

“Only those whose hands and hearts are pure…” (Psalm 24:4-5)

This verse reminded me that God is not interested in appearances.

The world focuses on outcomes, achievements, titles, and success. God looks deeper.

He examines both our hands and our hearts.

Our actions matter, but our motives matter too.

As believers, our pursuit should not simply be to look righteous but to genuinely become more like Christ from the inside out.

Trusting God Will Never Be Wasted

“No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced…” (Psalm 25:3)

I know this verse is one I will carry with me for a long time.

Waiting on God can sometimes feel risky.

Trusting Him with your future, your health, your finances, your marriage, your business, or your dreams can feel vulnerable.

But David confidently declares that trust in God is never wasted.

His timing may differ from ours, but His faithfulness never fails.

God Guides Those Who Reverence Him

“Who are those who fear the Lord? He will show them the path they should choose.” (Psalm 25:12)

This verse was particularly comforting because I find myself in a season of building and decision-making.

There are plans to make, opportunities to consider, and prayers I am still waiting to see answered.

Yet David reminds us that guidance is not reserved for a select few.

God delights in directing those who seek Him.

Our responsibility is to remain close enough to hear His voice.

Keeping My Eyes on God’s Unfailing Love

“For I am always aware of your unfailing love…” (Psalm 26:3)

What we focus on shapes our perspective.

David intentionally fixed his attention on God’s love.

Not his enemies.

Not his problems.

Not his fears.

God’s love.

I have found that the days I consciously remind myself of God’s faithfulness are often the days when my peace returns.

There is something powerful about remembering.

Choosing Courage Over Fear

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)

One thing I love about David is that he didn’t deny reality.

He acknowledged enemies.

He acknowledged battles.

He acknowledged danger.

Yet he chose faith anyway.

That challenged me.

Faith is not pretending everything is okay.

Faith is believing God is greater than whatever you’re facing.

The God Who Holds Us Close

“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” (Psalm 27:10)

This may have been my favourite verse from this reading.

Human beings, even the best of us, have limitations.

People disappoint us.

People misunderstand us.

People leave.

But God’s love remains constant.

His presence remains steady.

His arms remain open.

And there is tremendous comfort in knowing that no matter what season we find ourselves in, we are never carrying it alone.

Final Thoughts

If there is one lesson I am taking away from Psalms 22–27, it is this:

God is trustworthy.

He was faithful before we knew Him.

He is faithful in the middle of our struggles.

And He will remain faithful long after the season has passed.

Whether you are navigating uncertainty, waiting for direction, carrying burdens, or simply needing renewed strength today, may these Psalms remind you of what they reminded me:

The Lord is your Shepherd, your Guide, your Defender, and your closest Companion.

You are not walking through this season alone.
