1 Samuel 8–12: Choosing Earthly Kings Over God & What It Teaches Believers Today

In 1 Samuel 8–12, we see a pivotal shift in Israel’s story—one that feels deeply relatable even today.

Israel had God as their King, yet they still asked for a human king.

Not because God failed them—but because they wanted to be like everyone else.

And honestly… how often do we do the same?

1. The Danger of Wanting to Be Like Everyone Else (1 Samuel 8)

“Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.” — 1 Samuel 8:5

This wasn’t just a leadership request—it was a heart posture issue.

God warned them clearly through Samuel what an earthly king would do:

  • Take their sons
  • Take their daughters
  • Take their resources
  • Ultimately, take their freedom

Yet, they still said: “We want a king.”

Lesson for Today

Sometimes we:

  • Choose trends over truth
  • Choose pressure over purpose
  • Choose what looks normal over what God has said

Comparison can make you reject God’s perfect will.

And what struck me deeply is the contrast:

  • Earthly kings take
  • Jesus (our true King) gives

2. The Beauty of Seeking God’s Voice (1 Samuel 9)

“Let’s go and ask the seer…”

There was a culture of seeking God intentionally.

People didn’t just move blindly—they paused to ask:

“What is God saying?”

Saul wasn’t even initially looking for God—but his openness to wise counsel led him into divine purpose.

Lesson for Today

You don’t have to start perfectly—you just need to stay open.

  • God can redirect your journey
  • God can speak through people
  • God can use simple obedience to reveal bigger purpose

Obedience positions you for divine encounters.

3. God Calls You His Own (1 Samuel 10)

“The Lord has appointed you… his special possession.”

This part is so personal 🤍

Before Saul became king, God already defined his identity.

And not just that—

“God gave him a new heart.”

But Then… Saul Hid

“He is hiding among the baggage.”

This really made me pause.

God had called him.

God had anointed him.

God had given him a new heart.

Yet he still hid.

Lesson for Today

How often do we:

  • Hide behind fear
  • Hide behind excuses
  • Hide behind “I’m not ready”

When God has already called us?

You can be chosen and still feel unqualified—but hiding is not the answer.

4. The Power of the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 11)

“The Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul…”

This is the turning point.

The same Saul who hid… now leads.

What changed?

The Spirit of God.

Lesson for Today

What you’re trying to do in your own strength:

  • Build
  • Lead
  • Fight
  • Sustain

You actually need the Holy Spirit for it.

Calling without the Spirit leads to struggle.

Calling with the Spirit leads to impact.

5. Remembering God Changes Everything (1 Samuel 12)

“Stand here quietly… as I remind you of all the great things the Lord has done.”

Samuel calls the people to remember.

Because forgetfulness leads to:

  • Disobedience
  • Fear
  • Idolatry

But remembrance restores:

  • Faith
  • Perspective
  • Alignment

And Then This Beautiful Reminder:

“The Lord will not abandon his people… it has pleased Him to make you His own.”

Even after their wrong choice, God remained faithful.

Lesson for Today

You may have:

  • Made wrong decisions
  • Gone your own way
  • Chosen what God didn’t ask for

But God’s heart is still:

“Return to me fully.”

6. A Final Warning That Still Applies Today

“Be sure to fear the Lord and faithfully serve Him…”

This chapter ends with both hope and warning.

  • Serve God → life, alignment, covering
  • Continue in sin → consequences

Lesson for Today

Grace is not a license to ignore God.

God is merciful—but He is also just.

Final Reflection: Who Is Really Your King?

This entire passage asks one deep question:

Is God truly your King?

Or are you:

  • Following culture?
  • Following pressure?
  • Following what looks easier?

Because choosing anything above God always comes with a cost.

My Personal Prayer

Lord,

Help me not to choose what is popular over what is right.

Help me not to hide when You have called me.

Give me a new heart continually and fill me with Your Spirit.

Teach me to remember all You’ve done and to serve You faithfully.

You are my King—now and always. 🤍
